Welcome to Part 2 of How to Survive a Recession.
With large companies announcing massive layoffs, it seems that finding a job in this day and age is impossible. And indeed, the economic climate is an extra challenge if you’re seeking a job. However, many employers are still desperately looking for highly skilled new employees to welcome to their team. We’ve summarized the Top 3 skills you need to become recession-proof in 2023. And as a bonus you’ll get some hand-on resources on how you can improve these in-demand skills!
Here we go:
1. Data Literacy
With data available in abundance to companies, employers increasingly rely on employees who can read, analyze and work with data. Even if your occupation is not related to that of a data analyst, there is a pretty high likelihood that even within your occupation and industry, data is being collected, processed and interpreted in one way or another. By learning how to work with data, you can stand out from the mass and significantly increase your value in the job market.
Data literacy being such an in-demand skill also means that there are a bunch of great resources out there that you can use to step up your data game. First, you can discuss with your supervisor or HR options for training internal to the organization. What data training is available to employees and which training is most relevant to your field? As a second step, you can find plenty of online courses external to your employer. For example, DataCamp or Coursera offer different courses on data analysis and interpretation.
2. Programming
If you want to maximize your chances of getting hired and boosting your salary, learn a programming language. Learning how to code may seem daunting, especially when you have not had many touch points with it in the past. However, there are at least two reasons why you should still give it a go. First, learning a programming language is similar to learning a spoken language. It is very confusing at first, but with determination and practice, you will soon make great progress. Meaning, you can learn how to code without having to have studied anything related to it. Second, programming is predicted to become the one must-have skill of future generations. This alone says a lot about the value of knowing how to code.
The most popular and in-demand programming languages are Python, JavaScript, and C++. Start with choosing one of the many introductory courses available at DataCamp. Similar to data literacy, the great thing about programming is that a lot of it is based on online open source support.
3. Soft Skills
Workplaces are becoming ever more diverse, dynamic and decentralized (think: smaller teams whose members live around the world and communicate remotely). So much so that soft skills such as effective (online) communication, problem-solving, teamwork and flexible adaptation to changing demands are essential for businesses to function effectively.
Therefore, invest some time into reflecting on your soft skills. What soft skills have you mastered? What soft skills could you work on and develop further? Prepare for interviews by thinking of very specific situations where you have showcased a specific soft skill and how it improved the collaboration, work outcome, etc.
Even if you are not looking for a new job at the moment, investing some of your time in acquiring these top 3 skills could help you negotiate a better salary and open doors to new projects.
